Insert dramatic music and announcer’s voice… for me, I always her Boyd Polhamus, but you can hear your own announcer… Every year on the first Saturday of November, the granddaddy of all chili-cook offs takes place at Rancho CASI de los Chisos in Terilingua, Texas. It all kicks off the Monday before and the winner is crowned on Saturday.
In order to compete in the chili cookoff you must qualify. CASI has roughly 500 sanctioned chili cook-offs throughout the year in order to make it to the championship. Just in case you didn’t make it, they do have CASI scholarship day which is the Friday of the cook-off. Where anyone can enter and compete in the International Bean Championship©, International Hot Wings Championship©, and the International Salsa Championship. All entry fees for these competitions on this day go towards the CASI scholarship program. Throughout the year they raise around $1,000,000 for local and national charities.
If you look at the CASI TICC General Schedule, you can easily spend a week down there or over there, depending on where you are, having a blast! From saloons, to domino tournaments, a light parade, dancin’ at the ranch, and several parties, you will be going nonstop. Pretty sure I just planned a trip for me and all of my friends next year, I’ll tell them eventually…
I don’t know about yall, but I always feel better when I plan a trip, or anything fun and it supports a cause. Click here for more information.
Also, for some pretty good recipes, they list the winners along with their recipes of all categories for the prior year on their website. If you like what you see here… you can sign up here to be a judge. I don’t know if you have ever judged any kind of cook-off, but I can definitely be a lot of fun.
This years dates are October 28 – November 2, 2019.
